Myanmar's manufacturing PMI slips back to 49.1 in September as new orders fall faster
Key points
- S&P Global's Myanmar manufacturing PMI fell to 49.1 in September (down from 50.3 in August), signalling a slight deterioration after a one-month improvement
- Output fell for a sixth straight month and new orders at the fastest pace since June, while factory employment rose again
- Myanmar trails Vietnam at 51.9 and Thailand at 54.3; the ASEAN index eased to 52.1
Facts
Headline: the S&P Global Myanmar Manufacturing PMI was 49.1 1 in September 2026, down from 50.3 in August, dropping back below the no-change mark. S&P Global attributes the decline mainly to "a steeper drop in incoming new work". Source: S&P Global (1 October 2026).
Components: output fell for a sixth consecutive month at a slightly faster pace, and new orders declined for a fifth month at the fastest rate since June. Employment rose, its sixth increase in 2026. Input prices rose at the fastest rate in four months, while output prices increased at the slowest rate of 2026. Supplier delivery times lengthened by the least since August 2025, and manufacturers continued to rebuild input stocks. Source: S&P Global.
Region: Vietnam's PMI eased to 51.9 2 (down from 53.3 in August), with new export orders falling for a second month at the fastest pace since April and employment down slightly for a second month (VnEconomy; Xinhua). Thailand's PMI rose to 54.3 3 (up from 53.8 in August; the highest since the end of 2025). The ASEAN manufacturing PMI was 52.1 4, down from 52.3 in August; a three-month low; survey data for the region were collected 10–24 September. Source: S&P Global.
Analysis
Over time, Myanmar's index moved from 47.4 5 in June to 49.3 6 in July and 50.3 7 in August, before September's 49.1. August's move into improvement territory did not hold: demand, not supply, is now the binding constraint, as supply-chain pressure eases while orders shrink.
Across the Mekong, Myanmar is the only one of the three surveyed markets below the no-change mark, against Vietnam's 51.9 and Thailand's 54.3. A combination of falling orders, rising headcount and input costs outpacing selling prices points to thinner margins for Myanmar manufacturers, in an economy where ADB forecasts FY2026 inflation of 24.0%. For lenders, that matters more for SME working-capital credit than for household credit, where factory hiring is still a mild positive.
Implications
Counterpoints and uncertainties
The PMI is a diffusion index from a panel of formal manufacturers; it does not cover agriculture, services or the informal economy, where most household incomes in Myanmar are earned. A reading this close to the no-change mark can reverse in a single month, and supply conditions remain exposed to fuel and transport disruptions.
