Facts

Growth: the National Statistics Office (NSO) estimates real GDP grew 9.95% year on year in Q3 2026 1, up from 8.81% in Q2 and 8.15% in Q1 2026. Growth for January–September is estimated at 9.01% 2. Industry and construction grew 12.50% 3 and services 9.54% 4 in Q3. Source: VietnamPlus citing NSO (2026-10-03).

Revision: the Q2 growth rate now cited is 8.81% 5, against the first estimate of 8.39% in the NSO's July release 6; Q1 is cited at 8.15% 7.

Prices: the consumer price index rose 5.08% year on year in September 8, up 0.62% month on month and 4.20% above December 2025, with transport and petrol the main drivers. The Q3 average was 4.80% 9 and the nine-month average 4.52% 10, up from 4.45% for the first eight months. Source: VnEconomy citing NSO (2026-10-03).

Firms: in the first nine months more than 223,900 enterprises were newly established or resumed operations 11, down 3.2% year on year; nearly 89,800 temporarily suspended operations 12, and over 48,700 completed dissolution 13, up 118.8% year on year. Analysis

Over time, quarterly growth has stepped up through the year, from 8.15% in Q1 to 8.81% in Q2 and 9.95% in Q3, with industry and construction leading. Nine-month growth of 9.01% is already above the ADB's September full-year forecast of 7.8% 14.

Across the region, the gap is wide: the ADB forecasts 2.0% for Thailand 15 and 3.9% for Cambodia 16 this year. Among these three markets, Vietnam's growth is running well ahead.

For consumer and small-business lending the picture is less one-sided. Inflation has moved up from an eight-month average of 4.45% to 4.52%, with September alone at 5.08%, and the average lending rate had already reached 10.7% in August 17. Real income gains for fixed-wage borrowers narrow when prices and rates rise together. The firm data point the same way: more dissolutions and fewer new entrants mean growth is concentrated in larger, export- and investment-linked producers, while household businesses and small firms, the core of unsecured and micro-SME books, face higher costs.

Implications

ExecutivesDo not read the headline growth rate as a uniform easing of borrower stress; segment risk appetite by sector and firm size.
InvestorsWeigh accelerating GDP against rising inflation, higher lending rates and the doubling of dissolutions when assessing consumer and SME lenders' asset quality.
OperatorsUpdate affordability models for the higher September price level and watch early arrears among household businesses and small traders.

Counterpoints and uncertainties

These are NSO estimates and are revised: Q2 growth moved from 8.39% to 8.81% between releases, so the Q3 figure may also change. The dissolution count reflects completed procedures, which can lag actual closures, and the release gives no breakdown by firm size or sector. Lower petrol prices would ease headline inflation quickly, since transport was the main driver in September.
