Analysis
Within Indonesia, household borrowing is growing faster outside the banks than inside them: pindar (online lending) outstanding rose 24.76% and finance companies' BNPL receivables 54.65% year on year in July (OJK), against bank consumer credit at 5.0% in August. Bank credit growth is being driven by corporate and investment lending, not households.
Across the region, Philippine bank consumer loans grew 17.1% in July (BSP), several times Indonesia's bank consumer-credit pace, although definitions differ (the Philippine series covers universal and commercial banks and includes credit cards, auto and salary loans). With the BI-Rate held at 5.75%, the slower bank consumer segment leaves room for non-bank and digital lenders, but also concentrates household credit growth where oversight and data sharing are thinner.
Implications
Counterpoints and uncertainties
BI's release confirms the headline growth figures, but the segment breakdown relies on two media reports citing BI. BI's money-survey series differs from OJK's commercial-bank series (OJK reported 13.58% for July), so levels and growth rates should not be mixed. One month's slowdown in consumer credit may reflect base effects rather than a change in household demand.
