Philippine inflation jumps to 7.2% in September, matching April's peak
Key points
- Headline inflation rose to 7.2% in September (up from 6.1% in August; matches April 2026), ending four months of easing.
- Food inflation rose to 6.7% and transport to 14.6%, so food as well as fuel drove the rise from August.
- The print sits at the upper half of BSP's 6.4%–7.4% forecast range and well above the policy rate of 5.0%.
Facts
Headline: the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported on 6 October that consumer price inflation was 7.2% year on year in September (up from 6.1% in August; matches April 2026). 1 April's 7.2% 2 had been the highest reading since March 2023, when inflation was 7.6%. 3
Components: food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation was 6.7% (up from 4.6% in August); 4 transport 14.6% (up from 13.5% in August); 5 and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels 8.4% (up from 7.9% in August). 6
Policy context: Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) had projected September inflation at 6.4%–7.4%. 7 Its policy rate stands at 5.0%, 8 against a government inflation target of 2–4%. 9
Analysis
Time series: inflation jumped from 4.1% in March to 7.2% in April, eased for four months to 6.1% in August 10, and has now returned to the April level (chart). The composition has changed: in August food inflation was only 4.6%, 11 while in September food joined transport and utilities in pushing prices up. Food price increases weigh most on lower-income households, which are also the main users of small-ticket consumer and salary loans.
Cross-country: Philippine inflation is now more than double Indonesia's September rate of 3.28% 12 and far above Malaysia's 1.9% in August. 13 Among the three maritime markets, the Philippines is the only one where inflation sits well above the policy rate, which leaves real borrowing costs negative but real household incomes under pressure.
Credit link: banks' consumer-loan NPL ratio had already risen to 5.49% in July 14 while consumer loan growth slowed to 16.2% in August. 15 A second inflation peak in the same year extends the period over which household budgets are squeezed.

Implications
Counterpoints and uncertainties
Part of the September rise came from vegetable prices, which can reverse quickly when supply normalises. Fuel prices depend on external oil markets and the peso, so inflation could ease again as it did after April. Higher inflation does not automatically mean higher defaults: wage adjustments and remittances can offset part of the squeeze on household budgets.
