Implications
Facts
In its East Asia and Pacific Economic Update released on 6 October 2026, the World Bank raised its 2026 real GDP growth forecast for the region to 4.5%, raised from 4.2% in the April 2026 update. 1 Growth is projected to ease to 4.4% in 2027. 2 The upgrade reflects high-technology investment and exports tied to global AI value chains; Pacific island economies were revised down.
Regional economies shipped US$1.4 trillion of AI-related goods in the year to April 2026 3, and AI-related products account for more than 70% of export growth in Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. 4 The Bank warned that a sudden reversal in AI spending or a broader slowdown could create macro-financial pressures in technology-dependent economies (Seeking Alpha; World Today Journal).
Analysis
The regional forecasters now point the same way for 2026. ADB raised its Southeast Asia forecast to 4.7% in September 5, and AMRO held ASEAN+3 at 4.1% on 5 October 6. The regions differ (the World Bank aggregate includes China and the Pacific, AMRO's includes Japan and Korea), so the levels are not comparable, but the direction of revision is.
The composition matters more for lenders than the headline. The upgrade is driven by electronics and AI-hardware exports, which create jobs in a narrow set of industrial clusters, while economies outside that chain are weaker: the same update cut Cambodia's 2026 forecast to 3.5% 7 on falling tourism and remittances. A stronger regional forecast therefore does not mean stronger household repayment capacity everywhere; consumer-credit performance will track local wages, remittances and tourism more closely than regional GDP.
Counterpoints and uncertainties
Country tables in the full report will show how evenly the upgrade is spread across economies. The forecasts assume continued AI investment abroad; the Bank itself names a reversal as a downside risk, and AMRO has said an AI slowdown could cut regional growth materially. Regional aggregates are dominated by China and say little about smaller economies such as Brunei or Timor-Leste.
