Key points

Implications for lenders

With volatile food inflation at 5.81% and provincial inflation as high as 8.07%, lenders serving lower-income or regional borrowers may want to tighten affordability assumptions and watch early arrears by province. Headline inflation of 3.23%, close to the 3.5% ceiling, suggests funding costs are unlikely to fall quickly, which can matter for pricing new loans.

Implications

ExecutivesFood-led inflation hits lower-income borrowers hardest; affordability checks based on headline inflation may understate pressure on these segments.
InvestorsSlowing core with rising food prices leaves Bank Indonesia's room to ease limited; funding costs for lenders may stay where they are into year-end.
OperatorsWatch early arrears in provinces with the highest inflation, where repayment capacity is under more pressure than the national figure shows.

Facts

Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reported on 2 November that the consumer price index rose to 112.56 in October, up from 109.04 in October 2025, 1 putting annual inflation at 3.23%, down from 3.28% in September. 2 Month on month, prices rose 0.22%, down from 0.30% in September. 3

By component, core inflation was 2.56%, down from 2.84% in September; 4 volatile food was 5.81%, up from 5.03% in September; 5 and administered prices were 3.24%, little changed from 3.25% in September. 6

By expenditure group, food, beverages and tobacco rose 4.82%, up from 4.37% in September, contributing 1.40 pp to headline inflation, up from 1.28 pp in September. 7 BPS named cayenne chili, fresh fish, rice, cooking oil, chicken, cigarettes and beef among the main drivers. Transport rose 4.87%, little changed from 4.84% in September, 8 led by petrol, air fares and vehicle costs. Personal care and other services rose 4.52%, down from 7.77% in September. 9

All provinces recorded annual inflation, from 2.52% in DKI Jakarta to 8.07% in North Sulawesi. 10

Analysis

Time series: headline inflation has moved in a narrow range since May (chart), and October's reading is slightly below September's 3.28%, a pause rather than a clear turn. The headroom to the 3.5% ceiling moved from 0.22 pp in September to 0.27 pp. 11

The composition matters more for household credit than the headline. Core inflation fell from 2.92% in August to 2.56%, while volatile food accelerated. Food takes a larger share of spending in lower-income households, the core customers of micro, multifinance and online lenders, so their real disposable income is squeezed more than the headline suggests. The drop in personal care inflation from 7.77% also pulled core down; the October release does not say how much of that came from gold jewellery.

Cross-country: Indonesia's 3.23% sits between Malaysia's 1.8% and the Philippines' 7.2% in September. With Bank Indonesia's rate at 5.75% and inflation close to the ceiling, the October print gives little new room for easing before the board meets again in November.

Counterpoints and uncertainties

Volatile food prices can reverse quickly with harvests and weather, so October's mix may not persist. The fall in core inflation partly reflects a single group, personal care, and may not signal weaker underlying demand. Inflation is within the target band, and Bank Indonesia also weighs the rupiah and growth in its decisions.
