Facts
Forecasts: the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Economic Update, presented on 6 October, projects Vietnam's real GDP growth at 7.4% 1 for 2026, raised by 1.1 percentage points from the previous World Bank projection, the largest upward revision in the region. It projects 7.3% 2 for 2027. Average inflation is projected at 4.2% 3 for 2026, driven by fuel, housing and utility costs.
External position: the Bank says imports are growing faster than exports, partly because of electronics inventory build-up and higher chip and fuel prices, and expects foreign-exchange reserves to fall below two months of imports 4 in 2026. It warns that a reversal in global AI-related demand could hit Vietnam's exports and manufacturing. Sources: VOV (6 October), VIR and VnEconomy (7 October).
Region: in the same update, Thailand's 2026 forecast is 2.0% 5, raised by 0.7 percentage points from the previous World Bank projection, and Cambodia's is 3.5% 6.
Analysis
Across lenders, the World Bank is among the more cautious recent forecasters for Vietnam: ADB's September projection is 7.8% 7, and official data already show 9.01% 8 growth for January–September. A full-year outcome near the World Bank figure would require a sharp fourth-quarter slowdown, so the forecast is better read as a signal of where the Bank sees risk than as a point estimate.
Across the Mekong, the gap is wide: Vietnam's forecast is more than three times Thailand's 2.0% and roughly double Cambodia's 3.5%. For lenders, the more relevant line is the external one. Year-on-year inflation of 5.08% 9 in September is already above the Bank's full-year average, and reserves projected below two months of imports limit the State Bank of Vietnam's room to ease. That is consistent with average lending rates of 10.7% 10 in August, nearly 2 percentage points above end-2025, and with credit growth of 11.59% 11 year to date running ahead of the economy.
Counterpoints and uncertainties
Forecasts from different institutions use different data cut-offs; the coverage does not state whether the World Bank figure includes the third-quarter GDP release of 3 October, so part of the gap with the nine-month outturn may be timing. Reserve cover depends on the import bill: if oil and chip prices ease, the projection could improve. A reversal in AI-related export demand would hit growth more than the forecast assumes.
