Key points

Implications for lenders

For lenders funding in Singapore dollars, the hold means no additional tightening from this review, although the April and July moves remain in place. With core inflation forecast at 1.5–2.0% for 2026, living-cost assumptions in affordability checks may need little change, but the quarterly contraction in manufacturing (-0.9%) can justify closer monitoring of repayments from borrowers tied to that sector.

Implications

ExecutivesFunding and pricing plans can assume no further MAS tightening for now, while keeping a scenario for renewed tightening if upside inflation risks materialise.
InvestorsStrong but slowing growth and a narrower inflation range lower the near-term macro pressure on Singapore consumer credit quality.
OperatorsAffordability checks can keep using current living-cost assumptions; manufacturing-linked borrowers deserve closer monitoring after the quarterly contraction.

Facts

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) left monetary policy unchanged at its October review on 14 October 2026, maintaining the rate of appreciation of the S$NEER policy band with no change to its width or the level at which it is centred. It had tightened in April and July 2026 (source: AsiaOne, reporting the MAS statement).

Advance estimates released by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) the same day show real GDP growth of 5.4% year on year in Q3 2026, down from 6.2% in Q2 2026. 1 The release gives Q2 growth as 6.2%, compared with 5.9% in MTI's August release. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis the economy grew 1.1% (down from 1.5% in Q2 2026). Manufacturing grew 7.5% year on year (down from 12.9% in Q2 2026) but contracted quarter on quarter (-0.9%), after 6.3% growth in Q2 2026 (source: MTI).

MAS now expects core inflation to average 1.5–2.0% in 2026, narrowed from 1.5–2.5%, and both core and headline inflation to average 1.5–2.5% in 2027, with core easing from around mid-2027. 2 MAS said the risks to inflation remain tilted to the upside and that it is well positioned to respond to risks to medium-term price stability (source: AsiaOne; Red Hot Singapore). Core inflation was 2.2% in August (up from 2.0% in July). 3

Analysis

Over time, growth is cooling from a high base: Q3's 5.4% follows 6.1% in the first half of 2026, and the quarterly fall in manufacturing (-0.9%) points to the technology-led expansion losing some momentum. Even so, Q3 growth sits within MTI's 2026 forecast range of 4.5–5.5% and above AMRO's 4.8% projection for the full year. On prices, MAS narrowed its 2026 core range to 1.5–2.0% even with August core at 2.2%, indicating it expects the full-year average to stay within that range. The pause therefore leaves the two earlier tightenings in place rather than adding to them, while growth remains firm.

Counterpoints and uncertainties

GDP estimates are revised: Q2 growth now stands at 6.2% versus the earlier 5.9%, and Q3 will be updated in November. MAS describes inflation risks as tilted to the upside, so the hold does not rule out tightening later, and a sharper slowdown in AI-related activity in 2027 would weigh on growth and incomes.
